The Board of Directors [2], the governing body of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), is a volunteer group of members who are clinicians, researchers, and others with a commitment to advancing treatment, research, training, and education about anxiety disorders and depression. Board members reflect the highest standards of conduct and contribute their skills and resources to advance the mission of ADAA.

The ideal candidate is someone who considers ADAA his or her professional home; embraces the concept of a multidisciplinary organization involving clinicians and researchers from different disciplines; will actively recruit new members; promotes, presents, and attends the annual conference; and thinks strategically about the organization's growth and development.   

Duties and Responsibilities

Board members serve a three-year term that may be renewed in accordance with the ADAA Bylaws. [3] The Board meets twice a year, holds monthly conference calls, and conducts business throughout the year. Directors sign a code of ethics and agree to serve the organization in a manner that maintains confidence and trust in the integrity, honesty, objectivity, and credibility of ADAA. All Board members are expected to contribute to discussions, participate on monthly conference calls, attend two Board meetings per year, participate at the annual conference, and be accountable for projects and programs they oversee.

In addition, Board members agree to the following:

• Contribute constructively to discussions and decision-making processes throughout the year.
• Manage the fiscal and business affairs of ADAA, placing the organization as the priority.
• Grow membership by actively promoting ADAA to colleagues, peers, trainees, and students.
• Establish and communicate organizational priorities and activities that help achieve the ADAA mission.
• Engage in planning that advances the organization's public education and outreach initiatives.
• Promote ADAA as the resource for training and dissemination of research in anxiety disorders and depression.
• Oversee and constructively evaluate activities of committees, task forces, and special interest groups.
• Solicit, nominate, and approve recommendations for award recipients.
• Enhance and support fundraising initiatives.
• Nurture succession of leaders by engaging new volunteers in ADAA activities.

Nomination Guidelines

• Nominees must be ADAA professional members in good standing.
• Nominees must demonstrate regular participation in ADAA activities, annual conferences, and committees.
• Nominees should be passionate advocates for ADAA, able to articulate in their personal statement the contributions they will make toward meeting the mission and vision of ADAA.
• Nominees must be able to carry out responsibilities and participate in monthly conference calls, conduct business via e-mail, and attend two Board meetings a year.

• Average time commitment is three to five hours every month.

Nomination Procedure

• Members may nominate themselves or be nominated with permission.
• Nominees must submit the following:

1. CV
2. Personal statement (up to 750 words): Describe what you hope to contribute and gain from serving on the Board of Directors, including your relevant experiences and position in other organizations.
3. Your ADAA involvement: List committees, conferences attended, presentations, special interest groups, etc.
4. Cover letter of nomination from nominator or yourself.

• Nominees may have letters of support sent to the Nominating Committee by November 4, 2013.
• After November 4, all nominees' personal statements will be posted in Social Community, the ADAA members-only private online network for review and confidential comments. There ADAA members may review applicants and send confidential comments to the Nominating Committee.

• The Nominating Committee will review all nominations; nominees may be interviewed by telephone or in person.
• The Nominating Committee will rank nominees and present them to the Board of Directors for final approval.
• Nominations for the Board of Directors must be postmarked by November 4 or they will not be accepted.
