Online Peer-Networked Collaborative Learning for Managing Depressive Symptoms
The Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies (CBITs) is developing and testing a mobile phone intervention that utilizes multiple methods of communication to provide care for depression and can continuously connect to, collect data from, and reach out to the adult patient. CBITs is developing a system that interprets and determines the patient's location, activity, social context, mood and aims to provide skills that may help individuals with depression.
This project has 2 main aspects that aim to evaluate internet-based interventions to help adult participants learn how to better manage depressive symptoms.
Social Networking: The goal of the intervention is to provide skills and training techniques to manage symptoms by using an interactive website with a social network of other individuals struggling with the same symptoms. The intervention is designed so that people do not need to make regular trips to a clinic or office.
Virtual Humans: In collaboration with the Institute for Creative Technologies of the University of Southern California, CBITs is developing and testing virtual humans that provide interpersonal skills training. The programmable virtual humans will allow the patient to interact with an ideal speaker that will be a representation of him/herself and test out interpersonal behaviors while receiving feedback on the effects of different ways of communicating.
1) Is at least 19 years of age
2) Has an e-mail account, computer
3) Has regular access to the internet
4) Is able to speak and read English
5) Lives in the United States
