Childhood GAD

My son, age 12, has serious anxiety when he decides to try a new sport. He is always really great at any sport he attempts, but is afraid to step out of the box and experience something new. In the past, his father and I have let him quit and continue making excuses for his decision not to do something. We have decided this year, he must continue anything new he attempts to play. He always plays soccer and this is his comfort zone and is even team captain. He decided this year to try Cross country and after the first practice returned home with all kinds of excuses why he doesn't want to participate. His father and I have decided he must complete the season with no excuses. We just don't want him to quit things when its out of his comfort zone. It is totally related to his anxiety about failing to complete something at the top of his game. Please help with any advice.
