Dr. Rothbaum is a pioneer in the application of virtual reality for the treatment of psychological disorders such as PTSD. In the mid-1990s she founded a virtual reality exposure therapy company called Virtually Better, Inc., which treatment methods have been used to treat people with fears of flying and public speaking, and with addictions.

Dr. Rothbaum has been an ADAA member since 1996.
