*Note: Although there are
no self-help groups currently listed here, that is not an accurate reflection
on the existence of groups in your state.
The groups included within the ADAA Self-Help Network have made the
association aware of their presence and are therefore listed on the Web
site. Other existing groups may not have
done so. For more information about
support groups in your area, please contact your local hospital, community
clinic or medical school. Professional
societies, such as state-level organizations of psychiatrists, psychologists
and social workers, may also have additional information.
An effective group will assist members in recovery through
mutual support rather than form a professional relationship as with a licensed
treatment specialist. Self-help support
groups are not intended to play the role of “therapist” and should
not be used as a substitute for proper diagnosis and professionally supervised
treatment.
