Anxiety disorders affect 40 million Americans and women twice as often as men. While we are aware of the higher incidence rate in women, researchers continue to study the gender differences of anxiety disorders and the risk factors that may make people more prone to these conditions.

The term “anxiety disorder” refers to five psychiatric disorders that involve extreme fear or worry including: generalized anxiety disorder; panic disorder; obsessive-compulsive disorder; phobias; and posttraumatic stress disorder. People with an anxiety disorder have persistent, intense, and irrational anxiety that is uncontrollable and affects their daily lives.
